Jamestown is the county seat of Russell County, on the western end of Lake Cumberland. Wolf Creek Dam, which created the lake, sits just south of town, and some of the lake's best-known marinas and its only state resort park are minutes away. Neighboring Russell Springs, the county's largest city, is about six miles north.
Russell County has a strong lake-home market, with lakeside developments, second homes, and full-time residences, along with in-town homes and rural acreage.
Life on Lake Cumberland
Lake Cumberland spans more than 65,000 acres with over 1,200 miles of shoreline. From Jamestown you're close to:
- Lake Cumberland State Resort Park – Lure Lodge, cabins, indoor and outdoor pools, trails, and lake access
- Lake Cumberland State Dock – one of the lake's largest marinas and a center of its houseboat culture, home to an annual in-water boat show
- Jamestown Marina and Wolf Creek Marina – full-service marinas with slips and rentals
- Fishing – Lake Cumberland has produced state-record striped bass, walleye, and sauger
Buying on the lake? Lake Cumberland's shoreline is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, so lake access, dock permits, and shoreline use vary from property to property. We'll help you understand exactly what access comes with a home before you buy.
Wolf Creek Dam & the Cumberland River
- Wolf Creek Dam – a mile-long dam built by the Corps of Engineers that impounds the Cumberland River to form the lake, with scenic overlooks
- Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery – trout hatchery and visitor center just below the dam
- Cumberland River tailwater – cold water below the dam supports a well-known trout fishery for many miles downstream
- Kendall Recreation Area – Corps of Engineers campground, trails, and river access at the base of the dam
Healthcare, Education & Work
