Founded in 1801 and named after Thomas Jefferson's Virginia home, Monticello is the county seat of Wayne County, on the southern side of Lake Cumberland. The town is known as the Houseboat Capital of the World, home to one of the largest concentrations of houseboat manufacturers anywhere, and its economy is closely tied to the lake.
Monticello offers a quieter, more rural pace than the larger lake towns, with a mix of in-town homes, lake-area cabins and second homes, and wide-open farmland across Wayne County, often at prices below comparable properties elsewhere on the lake.
